Reading University Men's Hockey Club
Reading University has over 17,000 students from over 150 countries. The Men's Hockey Club is consistently growing and has over 90 members.
We are one of the largest and most successful clubs in the University with roughly 100 members. We boast 5 strong men’s teams competing in BUCS leagues every Wednesday, and one men’s team competing in a local league every Saturday. All the teams also take part in a cup competition. We have had huge success on the pitch this season, with our 1sts being in the BUCS Premier League the highest ranked league in England and our 4ths and 5ths after a tough campaign being promoted. The 2nds and 3rds narrowly missed out, both finishing second and the 2nd XI won the South East Conference Cup competition. The club can cater for everyone, from beginners to those looking to compete at the highest possible level at University.
Although we are one of the largest clubs at the university, we still successfully manage to remain a very close knit and social club, where everyone knows everyone, largely down to our regular whole club socials. The club host several socials each term, with and without the Women’s Hockey Club. At these events, the whole club comes together to socialise and hopefully celebrate good on-pitch results! This is a great chance to get together with fellow hockey club members. There is also a strong club tradition where individual teams get together post-match on Wednesday evenings to celebrate success, or if not success, celebrate life!
The Club currently work with Reading Hockey Club, one of the best clubs in the country, sharing resources, from pitches to international level coaches, as well as giving you the opportunity to join Reading Hockey Club to play both University and Club hockey.
Local schools use our facilities during the day, and Phoenix & Ranelagh Hockey Club also use our pitch as their home venue for matches and training in the evenings and weekends.
The annual Varsity competition takes place in March against Oxford Brookes. This takes place over 1 day with all the teams taking part plus others that do not usually compete in the weekly BUCS leagues for example Polo, Equestrian, Swimming etc. On average there are between 900 – 1100 students present on the day from both institutions. 2017 saw victory for Reading, away at Oxford Brookes. 2018 will be at home here in Reading where we aim to defend the title.
